Squirrels

Randwick Squirrels have been very busy this Autumn term, working on "Explore Outdoors", "Brilliant Builder" and "All About Adventure" badges. The Squirrels started earning their "Explore Outdoors" badge by taking part in a backpack packing activity where they had to decide what clothing and equipment was needed for different weather conditions e.g. hot, cold, rainy, snowy weather. After completing the task, the Squirrels then designed their own backpacks and drew things they thought would be useful when going on a hike. Some ideas included snacks, headtorch, water, cuddly toys. We finished off the badge by going on a hike around Stratford Park, using our senses to explore the world around us as well as looking for Squirrels. We were lucky to spot 4. For the "Brilliant Builder" badge the Squirrels worked on their STEM skills by using lollipop sticks and pegs to build bridges sturdy enough to help some animals cross a river. With great teamwork and lots of critical thinking the Squirrels managed to create great constructions and all the animals were able to cross the river safely (including some big ones). We also made houses using different materials and finished off the badge in Randwick Woods working together to build a big den that fitted all the Squirrels in. Building a den also counts towards "All About Adventure" badge as well as Firelighting. During the firelighting meeting, the Squirrels helped to light little fires and made s'mores, which they then enjoyed eating. Our last session before Half term, included a science experiment to make sick monsters, creating monster paintings using straws and watercolours, working on our fine motor skills by making spiderwebs and making Halloween party poppers, which we used to check whose spider will fly the furthest.

Who are Squirrels

We’ve started opening a new provision for four to six year olds called Squirrels, to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it’s most needed.

We run one Squirrel Drey at Randwick Scout Group on a Friday evening.

The early years project

Every week, our Squirrels gather to grow and learn their way through lots of different games and activities

Squirrels can achieve anything they set their minds to – and they have lots of fun along the way.

The one-hour sessions is a brilliant opportunity for young people to take their first step into being part of Scouts, and they’ll help everyone get ready for the adventure of school too.

Sessions are packed with outdoors activities, fun, games, badges, laughter, and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life.
